What’s the weirdest park you’ve ever been to? Let me guess, you’ve never been to the Haesindang Park (해신당 공원), or the penis park in South Korea? Because this is the park of the wieners! Big and small, thick and thin, long and short. Here you can see them all!
But why shouldn’t you skip the penis park in South Korea? How do you get there and is it really a bizarre place? Walk along through the penis park that started with a tragic legend…
Fact: Research shows that Koreans have one of the smallest ‘members’. This is not noticeable in this park! For more info, see the World map of the Penis Size.
A tragic legend: Masturbating into the sea
It’s not like there were spontaneous penises popping up from the ground. No, it all started with a Penis Sculpture Festival. That is now a thing of the past. So, what are we going to do with the big giant phallic statues? A park? It only really started to become something after a tragic legend.
On a rock a bride waited for her lover. Her husband left her behind because he had to work. Suddenly a big storm approached and the woman fell into the water. She did not survive and drowned. From that moment on, all the fish left at a high pace. Disaster! And then something remarkable happened…
A surprise followed when a man decided to spread his body fluids in the beautiful South Korean waters. Spontaneously the fish came back and the local villagers were happy!
To celebrate this, a penis park was built on this spot, in which the male ‘member’ would be shown in various ways. And still there is enough fish in the nearby sea! Mission accomplished!
A relaxed walk through the Penis Park
By bus you can reach the penis park within 45 minutes from Samcheok. Tell the bus driver that you have to get out at the erm… penis park and if it’s okay he will let you out on top of the hill. Saves you a long walk going up the hill…
One ticket costs 3000 won (2,25 euro). It’s not too bad with thee crowds, so it’s possible to touch the images. Not that I needed to, but still… The best thing about the penis park is the reaction of a group of elderly South Koreans. With every image there is laughter and they have the greatest fun. Not unimportant in the life of mankind!
Thankfully there are also benches to rest on. But be careful where you sit! Sometimes there’s something sticking up.
It is also possible to hop on a traditional penis cradle. And don’t forget to take a look at the sea. Between the rocks is a statue of the drowned lady, looking for help…
Fact: The longest penis ever measured of a man is 33.2 centimeters.
Fishing Village Folk Museum: Full of … folklore
Finally, the ticket also includes access to the Folk Museum of Sinnam. Pretty funny and fortunately it’s not ‘just’ about penises. A little bit silly of me that the pictures below are only about penises. This is certainly not the case all the time in the Fishing Village Folk Museum. They also exhibited traditional clothing from the village!
If you are on Jeju Island, consider a visit to Loveland. Also in this park you will find special images in special positions…
The Penis Park… Highly recommended?
The Haesindang Park is located near the small fishing village of Sinnam. If you happen to pass by, then it’s nice to drop in (because you can!). If only because of the reactions of the South Koreans themselves. But it’s not in a tourist area and to say it’s one of the most important highlights of South Korea… No, it is not. But bizarrely so!
Planning a visit to the Penis Park?
How do I get there?
By public transport it is quite difficult to get to the park. Especially since there is only one bus an hour. From Samcheok Busstation bus 24 (40 minutes, 1300 won) drives in 45 minutes to the penis park. Inform the bus driver that the destination is the Haesindang Park (해신당 공원) . Access to the park costs 3000 won (€2.25).
From March to October the Haesindang Park is open from 9 am to 6 pm. From November to February from 9 am to 5 pm.
